Virtual, affirming nutrition support for ARFID

If you or someone you support is navigating Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), finding a provider who understands the complexity of eating with ARFID can make a difference.

Our registered dietitians specialize in ARFID nutrition counseling and provide virtual support throughout Massachusetts. Our approach is neurodivergent-affirming, weight-inclusive, and grounded in safety, autonomy, and meeting you where you are with food.

We work with adults, teens ages 16+, and caregivers looking for individualized support with nourishment and the everyday challenges that can come with ARFID.

ARFID Nutrition Counseling in Massachusetts

ARFID can look different from person to person. Some people have a very limited range of preferred or safe foods, while others may struggle to eat enough because of low appetite, sensory sensitivities, fear of choking or vomiting, or other difficult experiences around food.

Nutrition counseling may support you with:

  • Getting enough energy and nutrients with the foods currently accessible to you

  • Low appetite or limited interest in eating

  • Sensory sensitivities to taste, texture, smell, temperature, or appearance

  • Fear of choking, vomiting, allergic reactions, or other consequences of eating

  • Remembering to eat and other executive functioning challenges

  • Meal planning when traditional meal planning doesn’t work

  • Navigating changes to preferred or safe foods

  • Eating at work, school, college, restaurants, or while traveling

  • Identifying accommodations that make eating more accessible

  • Exploring new or different foods when that is something you want to work toward

Our goal isn’t to create a “perfect” diet or pressure you to eat foods that don’t feel accessible. We work collaboratively to identify strategies that support nourishment, safety, autonomy, and quality of life.

A Neurodivergent-Affirming Approach to ARFID

ARFID frequently intersects with sensory differences, executive functioning, anxiety, and neurodivergence.

Rather than viewing these experiences as something that simply needs to be overcome, we look at what may be making eating difficult and what supports or accommodations could make nourishment more accessible.

Our approach prioritizes:

  • Safety before pressure

  • Autonomy and consent

  • Flexibility and accommodations

  • Understanding sensory and nervous system needs

  • Practical strategies that work in real life

There is no requirement to try new foods in order to work with us.

Who We Work With

Our Massachusetts ARFID dietitians provide virtual nutrition counseling for:

Adults with ARFID

Many adults have struggled with eating since childhood without realizing their experience had a name. Others may recognize ARFID later in life or find that eating becomes more difficult during periods of stress, transition, illness, or increased demands.

We can help you better understand your individual eating needs and develop realistic strategies for making nourishment more accessible.

What to Expect From ARFID Nutrition Counseling

Your first appointment gives us time to understand your eating history, current challenges, nutrition needs, sensory preferences, routines, environment, and what you would actually like support with.

From there, we work together to identify realistic next steps.

Depending on your needs, this might include increasing access to preferred foods, making eating require less energy, developing flexible meal or snack options, supporting more consistent nourishment, addressing nutrition gaps, identifying accommodations, or exploring foods when you feel ready.

There is no one-size-fits-all ARFID plan.
